With over 22.2 million tourists visiting in 2024, Kerala, a state in southern India, saw a 21 pc increase compared to pre-pandemic levels. This growth highlights the state’s recovery and success in attracting visitors through targetted initiatives and a focus on offering diverse and unique experiences for tourists across various segments.

In a press statement, Kerala Tourism says that in P A Mohamed Riyas, Tourism Minister attributed the surge in arrivals to a series of targeted initiatives and the state’s commitment to offering diverse experiences to tourists.

It adds that the state government also announced the K-Homes project, which aims to increase accommodation options by utilising unoccupied homes near popular tourist destinations.

It further adds that initially launching in Kovalam, Kumarakom, Munnar and Fort Kochi, the project is expected to provide tourists with a more intimate stay.

According to the statement, Riyas says that efforts to strengthen women’s participation in tourism have led to 17,631 women registering under a new project aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs in the sector.

It adds that the initiative focuses on women-led businesses, including tour operators, homestay owners and drivers.

The statement adds that the Kerala Tourism has also signed an MoU with the Kerala Startup Mission to promote digital platforms for tourist information.

It adds that the state has introduced the Destination Challenge project, which identifies and promotes lesser-known destinations, catering to the growing trend of tourists seeking quieter, more affordable locations.

Kerala Tourism says that it has also focused on sustainable tourism, with a design policy ensuring that destinations remain environmentally friendly and visually appealing.

It adds that the other initiatives include the establishment of Local Youth Tourism Clubs and the training of local service providers like taxi drivers to enhance the tourism experience.

It further adds that in an effort to expand niche tourism offerings, Kerala has also promoted farm tourism. The Responsible Tourism Mission Society has trained 952 units in this segment, with 452 units performing well. Furthermore, the state plans to organise heritage walks involving students to promote its rich cultural heritage.
