West Bengal Governor, C V Ananda Bose, visited Guru Nanak College in Chennai, where he was earlier a faculty member. The Governor lauded the transformative journey of his former college.

In what was a rare return of a prodigal faculty member to his ‘alma mater’ Governor of West Bengal C V Ananda Bose revisited the institution where he commenced his career as a lecturer in 1972, marking a significant chapter.

During the visit on Monday, the Governor praised the college’s remarkable growth over five decades.

Upon arrival, the Governor was welcomed with a grandiose guard of honour. Principal of Guru Nanak College (GNC), T K Avvai Kothai, extended a warm welcome and provided a brief overview of the institution since its establishment in 1971.

In his address, Manjit Singh Nayar, General Secretary and Correspondent, Guru Nanak College, highlighted significant milestones achieved by the institution from 2008 onwards.

In a speech, Bose expressed his deep appreciation of the management and the entire team, recognising their substantial contributions to the institution’s development.

He also bestowed 10 awards of excellence, honouring outstanding faculty, students, and non-teaching staff with each award comprising a citation, a cash prize of INR 10,000 and a plaque.

Additionally, the Governor proposed the establishment of the Guru Nanak Chair for Academic Research and Publications at Raj Bhavan, West Bengal, to be led by a faculty member, aiming to promote scholarly pursuits in Guru Nanak’s name.

Extending an invitation, he urged the College to become the Nodal Institution for the south and east zones in the upcoming ‘Kala Kranti Mission,’ dedicated to fostering art and culture in India.

He drew a parallel between the impressive transformation of the college and his own life, proudly saying, “A great change that has happened here has also reflected in my humble life,” the Governor said.

He acknowledged the various changes within the institution and also commended its dedication to an integrated approach to education, particularly through the implementation of skill development courses.

Additionally, he praised the efforts towards empowering women through initiatives such as Udayal Padai, highlighting the college’s commitment to fostering gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Swati Paliwal, Dean of Academics, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks, turning the memorable occasion into a symbol of collaboration between educational institutions and governing bodies.
