The ever-evolving saree and its magic
Ultra-modern styling, unusual drapes
Saree, the traditional Indian garment, has been witnessing a change in styling by various designers and stylists for years, and yet again, a new era of not only experimenting with fabrics but also draping styles, is here.
Gone are the days when saree was only an Indian traditional attire. With time and western influences, it has turned into a modern narrative from just a mere occasional outfit; not only in terms of fabrics but also the draping styles are witnessing a reinvention.
From linen, denim sarees, bikini sarees, saree gowns, double pallu sarees to saris worn with belts, boots, shirts, jeans and boxy blouses, the garment is in a state of rethink.
Designers like Manish Malhotra, Tanira Sethi, Rta Kapur Chishti, Anavila, Sanjay Garg, Payal Khandwala and many more are innovating sarees on the loom, creating interesting and alternative draping techniques.
Fashion designers agree that the saree has evolved as a garment like never before and has now come back in the closets of many with a new style twist. Not only NRIs, but many foreigners demand sarees that are easy to drape and yet are attractive. The new facet of saree is also popular among youngsters as they generally do not know how to wear a saree, so these modified options where sarees can be draped in a Bollywood fashion come easy to them.
Various Bollywood actresses are also pumping the oomph meter by draping the saree in sexy and new styles. And one of the best examples would be Sonam Kapoor who is weaving her own fashion statement with the unique styles and fabrics she carries.
Sarees are now evolving more like a tailored piece and is wooing people by its oomph with a traditional touch in the most convenient yet attractive way possible, as it spells ‘Indian’ in a very sensual manner.
