Following the comeback of Bharatiya Janata Party in power in Delhi after 27 years, denizens of Delhi are eagerly waiting for the party to deliver on a variety of fronts as the expectations from the new government are high.
In the elections that were held on February 5, the BJP secured 48 of 70 seats in the Assembly, ending the decade-long rule of the Aam Aadmi Party, which saw its seat count fall dramatically from 62 to 22 and the Congress failed to gain a single seat for the third consecutive time.
Even while the BJP figures out who would the new Chief Minister of Delhi, the voters are expecting rapid delivery on the many promises that the party made during its electoral campaign.
They are specially keen to see action on long-standing issues such as sanitation, women’s safety and civic infrastructure. Specifically, they hope for better waste management, improved law enforcement and urgent road repairs.
Naresh Tayal, a businessman in Patparganj in eastern Delhi, hopes that the BJP will rectify the ‘mess that AAP made’. “ I hope the new elected party party will work on important issues such as pollution and infrastructure. I expect them to make strides in areas that directly improve the lives of Delhi’s residents, including free water, subsidized electricity, and efforts to improve public transport,” says Tayal.
The middle class, comprising a significant portion of Delhi’s population, anticipates improved infrastructure and civic amenities. The BJP’s campaign, which centred around continuing welfare schemes while promising ‘double engine development’, apparently resonated with voters.
“Now that BJP has won the seat, I expect a much more productive collaboration between the central government and the Delhi government. The focus should be on infrastructure, improving healthcare, and education, as well as ensuring a more robust law & order framework,” says Rahul Khanna, 54, Director at Paramount Bed, a Japanese healthcare company and a resident of Dwarka in western Delhi, tells Media India Group.
“The voters of Delhi have clearly sent a message about their desire for governance that delivers tangible results. This outcome shows that people are looking for change,” says Khanna.
Women voters, who were actively courted by all the parties with promises of direct benefit transfers, anticipate that the BJP will fulfil its commitments, such as financial assistance for pregnant women and increased pensions for widows.
“My expectations from the upcoming BJP government is to implement robust anti-corruption measures. They should also take comprehensive cleanliness initiatives across all areas of Delhi and a reassessment of welfare schemes to ensure effective resource allocation,” says Deepa Bisht, a resident of Delhi Cantonment constituency.
Looking ahead, residents emphasise the importance of good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.
“I expect BJP government to have transparency and build trust in the people. I also hope that they will fulfil all the goals and promises which they have made for the next five years,” says Anadi Salwan, a law student, tells Media India Group.
With the winning of the new party at the centre, the expectations of the public has changed since the present party has had a better track record with understanding what the people want while making it work with how the economy needs.
