Tucked away in the foothills of the Dhauladhar range, near the town of Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, lies the quiet village of Andretta.

Unlike popular tourist destinations, Andretta offers a unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty, making it a peaceful retreat for those seeking inspiration and calm.

A village for artists, by artists

Andretta’s story is closely tied to the world of art and theatre. In the 1920s, Norah Richards, an Irish writer and theatre lover, made this village her home.

She encouraged artists, writers and performers to come and live in the area, turning Andretta into a creative haven. Over the years, other artists followed, and the village slowly grew into a quiet but thriving artistic community.

Her house still stands today and is considered a heritage site, drawing visitors interested in theatre and history.

Decades later, Andretta continues to attract artists, writers and creative minds from all over the world. Several art studios and residencies offer space for people to stay and work on their projects.

The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain air, and lack of distractions make it an ideal spot for reflection and creativity.

Another one of the main attractions in Andretta is the Andretta Pottery and Craft Society. Founded in the 1980s, it has kept the tradition of handmade pottery alive. It is also India’s oldest pottery studio based in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

Visitors can watch skilled potters at work or even take short courses to try their hand at the craft. The studio produces beautiful stoneware pottery that is both useful and artistic, and many of the pieces are sold across India and abroad.

In addition to its artistic charm, Andretta is surrounded by lush tea gardens, pine forests and views of snow-capped mountains. Life here moves slowly.

There are no large hotels or fancy restaurants, only small homestays and family-run guest houses. This simplicity is part of the village’s appeal as it invites visitors to slow down and enjoy the little things.

How to reach?

Andretta is about 13 km from Palampur and can be reached by road. The nearest railway station is at Pathankot, and the closest airport is Kangra Airport (Gaggal), around 40 km away.

The village remains off the beaten path, far from crowded tourist spots, offering a more meaningful and immersive experience.

Where to stay and eat?

Andretta offers a handful of charming homestays, boutique guesthouses, and artist residencies that reflect the village’s rustic and creative spirit.

These accommodations are often run by locals or long-time residents who offer a warm, personal touch, many of them artists themselves. While you will not find luxury hotels or large resorts here, places like the Mirage, Norah’s House, and a few pottery-studio-affiliated stays offer comfort, creativity, and stunning mountain views.

Dining options are limited but thoughtfully curated. Most guesthouses serve home-cooked meals made from local ingredients.
