French hit redone by Kashyap’s Phantom
« La Famille Bélier », a huge French cinema hit in 2015, on the touchy subject of a family of deaf persons, will be remade in India by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom Films, the production house of Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl.
The film, which attracted more than 7 millions viewers in France and was also a success elsewhere in Europe, tells the story of a family where the deaf parents rely on their daughter who wants to become a singer and leave the nest.
Directed by Eric Lartigau, it evolves skillfully on the border of drama and comedy, ending up being a feel good movie. Its cast assembles a mix of Belgian (François Damiens) and French character actors (Karine Viard, Eric Elmosnino). And a young real singer, Louane Emera, famous there for taking part in the French version of the reality TV show « The Voice ».
Phantom gathers independent directors like Anurag Kashyap (« Gangs of Wasseypur », « Bombay Velvet ») or Vikas Bahl (« Queen ») and Madhu Mantena. And according to Kashyap, « with appropriate changes in sensibilities and the tone, it’ll become a very interesting story for our audiences ».
Reliance Entertainment, the film and TV branch of Anil Ambani’s conglomerate Reliance, intends to distribute worldwide different Indian versions, in several languages, of « La Famille Belier ».
Before this Bollywood journey, the film was also contemplated for a Hollywood remake.
