Biryani remained the most ordered dish for the 10th consecutive year

In 2025, India placed food orders at unprecedented scale. Swiggy, a leading Indian food delivery firm, says it received 93 million biryani orders, 23.7 million dine-out bookings and deliveries spanning 1.24 billion km, reflecting how deeply food shaped daily life and celebrations nationwide.

In a press statement, Swiggy says that biryani remained the most ordered dish for the 10th consecutive year while as chicken biryani accounted for 57.7 million of these.

It adds that Burgers ranked second with 44.2 million orders, followed by pizzas at 40.1 million. Vegetarian dosa recorded 26.2 million orders, placing it among the most ordered items nationwide.

According to the report, snack-time orders between 15:00 and 19:00 showed strong demand for burgers, rolls and pizza. Chicken burgers led snack orders with 6.3 million, followed by veg burgers at 4.2 million. Samosas and adrak chai continued to feature prominently during this time window, with 3.42 million samosas and 2.9 million chai orders.

It adds that dessert consumption remained high. White chocolate cake topped the list with 6.9 million orders, followed by chocolate cake at 5.4 million and Gulab Jamun at 4.5 million.

According to statement among Indian sweets, kaju barfi and besan ladoo together accounted for nearly four million orders. Chocolate flavours led ice-cream consumption.

It adds that global cuisines gained traction, led by Mexican food with 16 million orders, Tibetan cuisine with over 12 million orders and Korean food with 4.7 million orders.

It further adds that Matcha was the most searched global food category. Regional cuisines also expanded, with Pahari cuisine recording ninefold growth year-on-year, while Malabari, Rajasthani, and Malvani cuisines nearly doubled.

The report says that dinner continued to dominate ordering patterns, recording 32 pc more orders than lunch. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai remained the top cities by order volume.

It adds that quick food delivery through Swiggy Bolt expanded in 2025, with Bengaluru recording the highest number of Bolt deliveries, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai. Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Vizag and Kochi emerged as growth markets. Desserts, including chocolate cake and gulab jamun, were the most ordered Bolt items.

It further adds that Swiggy’s 99Store recorded its highest order volumes in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai, with Indore, Vizag, and Kochi showing increased usage.

According to the report chocolate pastries and chocolate cakes were the most ordered desserts. Biryani, paneer pizzas, chicken fry and garlic bread ranked among top savoury items.

It adds that consumer behaviour showed high-frequency usage. A Mumbai customer placed 3,196 food orders during the year, the highest nationally.

It further adds that in Hyderabad, a single customer spent INR 47,106 on festive gift packs. Large group orders were recorded across cities, including bulk biryani and dessert purchases.

The report further adds that breakfast ordering highlighted regional staples. Idli led with 11 million orders, followed by vegetarian dosa at 9.6 million. Vada, puri, and aloo paratha also featured among the most ordered breakfast items. Late-night ordering between midnight and 02:00 continued to grow, led by chicken burgers, biryani and pizzas.

It adds that festive periods generated significant spikes. Ganesh Chaturthi recorded 280,000 modak deliveries. During Navratri, Swiggy delivered over 100,000 vrat thalis, 99,200 plates of sabudana khichdi and 70,000 sabudana vadas. On Ashtami, 220, 000 orders were placed within one hour. Diwali week saw orders of 1.7 million kg of sweets, dry fruits and desserts.

According to statement dining out via Swiggy Dineout recorded 23.7 million dinners in 2025. Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad led bookings, while Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kochi, Dehradun, Vadodara and Mangalore featured among emerging markets.

It adds that total savings through Dineout reached INR 7.7 billion Buffet bookings increased 78 pc year-on-year, and premium dining bookings grew 123.7 pc.

Swiggy says that its delivery personnel collectively travelled 1.24 billion km during the year. Bengaluru-based Mohammad Razique completed 11,718 deliveries, while Chennai-based Poongodi completed 8,169 deliveries, the highest among female delivery partners.

It adds that 2025 data shows continued expansion of food delivery, quick commerce, and dining out across metros and emerging cities, with scale, frequency, and regional preferences shaping consumption patterns.
